Furnished Left Room - Ottawa Civic Hospital

Welcome to our cozy abode! Here is an overview of our home:

The House: 

• There are 3 levels to the home. On the upper level we have two bedrooms that we rent out to medical trainees. Details below.
• On the main floor is the bathroom that is shared by the two bedrooms, kitchen and doors to front or back yards. There is also a living room and office but those are not shared spaces.
• We sleep and have our own bathroom on the lower level
• It's a quiet house (other than squeaky floors) - we go to bed super early!

Your Room (The Left Room):

• Furnished with a comfortable queen-sized bed, a spacious dresser, a desk equipped with a light for those late-night studies, and a roomy closet. We've also installed room-darkening curtains for the odd day you get to sleep in :)
• ❄️ For your comfort: While our home has central air and heat, we understand that personal comfort varies. That's why we've added a window air conditioner and extra blankets to your room - ensuring you're comfortable no matter the season.
• You have a mini-fridge in your room as the kitchen fridge is not shared (though the rest of the kitchen is available to you!)
• We provide towels and facecloths, which we swap out on weekends
• For stays greater than two weeks we offer to change your bed linens every two weeks or offer you clean linens to replace on your own
• You have your own iron and ironing board

Kitchen:

• We have everything you could possibly need from containers for leftovers, travel mugs, plastic wrap/bags, tinfoil, etc. 
• You are always welcome to dine at the island or take your food back to your room
• A mini-fridge with freezer is available in your room. And while our main fridge remains private, rest assured that essential kitchen appliances like the microwave, stove, and oven are available for your use. We'd love to help you save money on eating out and yet understand you are short on time! We have an air fryer, InstantPot, Slow Cooker - pretty much anything you need to be able to prepare your food at home :-)
• We provide either a shelf or drawer for you to keep your non refridgerated food
• We provide a coffee maker and filters, seasonings such as salt and pepper as well as oil

Bathroom:

• It has a bath tub and shower, sink and toilet
• You will have space on a shelf to store your toiletries
• We clean the bathroom weekly but ask that you clean up after yourself as needed (leave no evidence!) and provide the necessary tools to do so - a plunger, toilet brush, cleaning wipes, etc.
• We provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash
• Wash cloths and towels are placed in your room but there are hooks to hang them in the bathroom

Laundry:

• A washer and dryer is located in the basement and is available for use at specific times (typically weekends 10-4)
• We provide soap, dryer sheets (unscented), drying rack if needed, stain remover, etc.

Outdoor Space:

• In the summer months, we have a beautiful backyard where you can sit outside to eat, use the BBQ, rest in a hammock, etc. And yes the wifi works out back :-)

Parking:

• We do not have parking available but here is an option:
  • The maximum time for weekday parking on our street is two hours but you can pay for parking at the hospital. Currently posted rates are $50/week.
  • You would be able to park on either our street or a nearby street overnight (to drive to and from the hospital each day).
  • Please note that our street is due to undergo infrastructre changes at which time the street would be torn up and you will need to park a couple of streets away. We have not yet been provided a start date for this project.

Us:

• Darlene is your point of contact if you have any questions and works from home;
• Terry works long hours away from home and is rarely seen :)
• Terry does get up early but we find that our renters are often up around the same time! 
• On weekends we are either puttering around the yard, out kayaking or cycling. Except for winter when we hibernate :-)

 FAQ:

Q. Which Ottawa hospital(s) are you close to?

• We are a 5 minute walk to the Royal Ottawa Hospital and a
• 12 - 15 minute walk to the Civic Hospital
• The Heart Institute is on the backside of the Civic Hospital so a 15 minute walk

Q. Who else is in the house?

• Terry and I live here and we have two rooms that we rent to medical personnel. Those rooms are on the upper level and our bedroom is in the basement. Kitchen and bathroom are on the main floor.

Q. Is there a private bathroom?

• The bathroom on the main floor is primarily shared with the other bedroom which typically has one person. Darlene works from home and may use the main floor washroom quickly during the day but when guests are home, we use our full bathroom in the basement.

Q. What gender is the person in the other room?

• We typically do not ask people what their gender is. Terry and Darlene are male and female so there will always be multiple genders in the home.

Q. Is there parking?

• There is only street parking and it is restricted to 2 hours between Monday to Friday 9-5. This means you would need to take your car to work. The Ottawa Hospital website outlines parking costs - currently they are $50/week.

Q. Does the bedroom door lock?

• Unfortunately not. The doors are very old and modern interior door knobs that lock do not fit. We are planning to replace the doors in early 2026

Q. Are there any animals in the house?

• Nope! We do not have any pets.
