Temerty Faculty of Medicine 🩺: Where Toronto's Heartbeat Meets World-Class Medical Training

Sunday, March 29, 2026

There's something kind of electric about studying medicine in a city that never really sits still. Founded back in 1843, the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine—renamed the Temerty Faculty of Medicine in September 2020—has grown into one of the world's top academic medicine institutions . And you can feel it: the pace, the purpose, the whoosh of ambulances outside major hospitals, the quiet “click-click” of late-night studying in modern learning spaces.

A medical school built for a diverse, real-world city

What makes Temerty stand out is how deeply it's connected to the community it serves. The Faculty supports a large, culturally diverse metropolitan population through 9 fully affiliated hospitals and 18 community affiliated sites . That means learning isn't stuck in a bubble. Students are exposed to different patient stories, different needs, and different ways care is delivered—sometimes it's intense, sometimes it's humbling, and honestly it changes you.

Two campuses, four academies, one four-year home base

The MD Program runs across two distinct campus communities: the historic St. George campus in downtown Toronto and the sleek, modern Mississauga campus . New students are assigned to either St. George or Mississauga, and if you're placed at St. George, you'll later be assigned to one of three academies: FitzGerald, Peters-Boyd, or Wightman-Berris . Mississauga offers are automatically placed with the Mississauga Academy of Medicine . The big thing? Your campus and academy assignment stays with you for all four years, so it starts to feel like your medical “neighborhood.”

Meet the Four Academies (and what they're known for)

  • FitzGerald Academy: Anchored by St. Michael's Hospital, and connected with St. Joseph's Health Centre and The Hospital for Sick Children. It's known for a supportive environment and strong clinical skills teaching during preclerkship .
  • Mississauga Academy of Medicine (MAM): Established in 2011, with Trillium Health Partners as the anchor site, including Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital, and Queensway Health Centre, plus learning spaces at UTM's health sciences complex .
  • Peters-Boyd Academy: Built around Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Women's College Hospital, and North York General Hospital. Students can be based at different sites in the foundations years, and the academy supports a large learner community each year .
  • Wightman-Berris Academy: A powerhouse network including UHN (Toronto General, Toronto Western, Princess Margaret, Toronto Rehab), Sinai Health System (Mount Sinai and Bridgepoint), and Michael Garron Hospital, with additional sessions at places like Baycrest and CAMH .

Why students love this structure (even when it's a lot)

This academy model isn't just administrative—it shapes your day-to-day life. You get a consistent base, familiar mentors, and a community that grows with you. Then, during clerkship, students from all academies rotate broadly across GTA sites, so your experience stays varied and wide . It's the best of both worlds: stability when you need it, and variety when you're ready for it. Some days will feel like “bam!” you learned a year's worth in one shift. Other days, you'll wonder if you're doing enough. You are, keep going.
