5 tips for an easy and effective spring clean

5 tips for an easy + effective spring clean

Helloooooo MedsHousing community! The days are getting longer, the sun feels warmer, and it seems like every day there are more and more birds outside. Spring has officially started to come out of hibernation, and we could not be more excited about it if we tried!

In the spirit of spring, this week we're covering some seasonally appropriate tips for your Spring Clean!

1. Break it down

If you have a penchant for lists, have to-dos for your to-dos, or are the friend who makes an itinerary for a weekend camping trip - this is your time to shine! For an efficient and organized spring clean, make a checklist and go room by room methodically. Thinking critically about which rooms need the most time and attention can help you skip over places you've already cleaned, and pay closer attention to those you may have neglected over the winter.

2. Do what makes sense

Spring cleaning is a great way to reset your space for the summer season - but feel free to take it a little bit literally and handle chores that make sense for the season. Try taking on some outdoor tasks like cleaning the grill, or sprucing up your balcony/backyard ahead of the warm weather season.

3. Don't go crazy on the cleaning products

Yes - admittedly, the best part of cleaning is buying the fancy new products. There are products that foam and bubble, gels and creams, powders and power cleaners. That said, even if they're lots of fun, you don't really need a lot of products to clean effectively. Stock up on a good all-purpose cleaner, some microfibre cloths and a scouring pad, and you should be good to tackle anything the bathroom, kitchen, or bedroom can throw at you!

4. Spark joy with organization!

The Container Store makes a killing with it, Marie Kondo has turned it into a science, and videos of it are almost meditative in their soothing powers - organizing is amazing. That said, when clutter builds up throughout the year, it can be hard to get started on reclaiming your space. Start by separating your bits and bobs into 4 categories - trash, give away, store or put away. Once the four categories are decided, it's time to get sorted! Sorting before cleaning also breaks the task down into smaller pieces, making it less onerous and easier to get through!

5. Don't forget to clean the clean things!

Last but not least - a super granular practical tip. Our dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, washing machines and dryers keep us clean and fed all year round, but sometimes they need a little TLC too! White vinegar is an excellent tool to help you clean all of your appliances. Run an empty load in your dishwasher or washing machine with a ½ cup of white vinegar, or add a couple of tablespoons to a bowl of water and heat to get tough stains out of the microwave and oven!
